Questions and answers
How many cameras does my home need?
It depends on the lot, not the size of the house. We map every approach to the house and tell you how many cameras cover it and where they go.
Where is the video stored, and for how long?
On a recorder inside your home. You get weeks of continuous recording; the exact length depends on the number of cameras and their settings, and we size it for your project.
Is there a monthly fee?
No. The recorder is yours and sits in your home, so there is nothing to pay each month for recording or for the app.
Do the cameras work at night?
Yes. They switch to infrared in the dark. The coverage plan shows each camera’s range at night.
What happens if the internet goes down?
Recording continues. The recorder is in your house, so it doesn’t need the internet to record. You just can’t watch remotely until the connection is back.
Do you install wired or wireless cameras?
Wired. Wireless cameras still need a power cable, so we run one cable that carries both power and a wired network connection. The picture doesn’t drop, and there are no batteries to charge.
How long does installation take?
Most projects take 1–3 days on site. You get the timeline in the plan, before we start.
How fast do you respond?
The same day. Send a few photos or call, and we reply the same day.
Why is my Wi-Fi weak in some rooms?
Usually because of the house, not the internet plan. Stucco walls with metal mesh inside, brick, long hallways and a router tucked in a cabinet all block the signal. The fix is more access points in the right places, not a stronger router.
Mesh or wired access points: what's the difference?
A mesh system passes the signal between boxes through the air and loses speed at every hop. A wired access point gets the full connection over its own cable. We wire access points wherever a cable can reach, and use wireless ones only where it can’t.
Do I need to change my internet provider?
No. We work with any provider: Comcast, AT&T, Sonic, Starlink and others. Your plan stays the same; the Wi-Fi inside the house gets better.
How many access points does my home need?
It depends on the layout and the walls more than on the square footage. We walk the house and the plan shows exactly how many access points you need and where they go.
Can you cover the backyard and the garage?
Yes. We plan coverage for the whole property, including the yard, the garage and any outbuildings, not just the rooms inside.
Can guests use my Wi-Fi without access to my devices?
Yes. You share a separate guest Wi-Fi from the app in a few taps. Guests get temporary access to the internet, and never join the network your computers, cameras and smart devices are on.
How do you check that the Wi-Fi works?
Before we leave, we run a speed test in every room and outside where you need coverage. If a spot falls short, we fix it before handover.
Can I answer the door from my phone?
Yes. When someone rings, your phone shows who it is and you can talk to them, whether you’re upstairs or out of town.
Does the doorbell record video?
Yes. It records to the same recorder as your cameras, inside your home, with weeks of continuous recording. A second camera covers the doorstep, so packages are on video too.
Why a wired doorbell instead of a battery one?
A battery doorbell needs charging and depends on Wi-Fi. Ours runs on one cable that carries power and the network connection, so it never runs flat and doesn’t drop offline.
What can the sensors detect?
Doors and windows opening, motion, water leaks, temperature, humidity, light and the sound of breaking glass. We recommend only the ones your home needs.
Do the sensors work with Apple Home, Alexa or Google Home?
They work in the UniFi Protect app, together with your cameras and doorbell. They don’t connect directly to Apple Home, Alexa or Google Home.
Do the sensors need wiring?
No. They run on batteries that last years, so they can go on doors, windows and under sinks without any cable.
Do you need to open walls?
Usually not. Most runs go through the attic and the crawlspace. When a wall or ceiling does need opening, we close it up neatly afterwards.
Can you remove old, unused cable?
Yes. Old cable along the route we’re working on comes out as part of the job and is set aside neatly. Removing old cable elsewhere in the house is available on request.
What cable do you use?
Cat6 for every new Ethernet run. It carries full-speed home internet with room to spare, and powers cameras and access points over the same cable.
Will I get a record of where the cables go?
Yes. You get a simple map of every run, and each cable is labeled at both ends.
Will the new wall plates match my outlets?
Yes. We match jacks and wall plates to the ones already in your house.
Where does the rack go?
Usually in a closet or another closed space near where the internet comes into the house. If it has to be in the open, we still build it neatly into a rack.
Do I need a full rack, or is a small wall cabinet enough?
Most homes need a small wall-mounted cabinet. We size it to your equipment, with room to add more later.
Can you clean up the rack I already have?
Yes. We take it apart and rebuild it: cables sorted and shortened, dead equipment removed, everything mounted and labeled, and a map of what’s where.
Won't the equipment overheat in a closet?
Not if airflow is planned. We account for ventilation and heat when we choose the rack and where it goes.
What happens during a power outage?
Without backup, the network and cameras go off until power returns. On request, we add a battery backup (UPS) that keeps them running through a short outage.
Is the site survey free?
Yes. The visit, the coverage map and the recommendation cost you nothing.
How long does the site survey take?
One to two hours on site, depending on the size of the property.
When do I get the plan?
Within one day of the visit: a coverage map, a device list, the reasoning behind each choice, and an estimate.
Can you give an estimate from photos?
For small jobs, yes. Send a few photos of the spot and what you want done, and we’ll reply the same day. Larger systems need a visit.
Who owns the system after installation?
You do. Everything is set up under your own account: the equipment, the recordings and the admin access. You’re never locked in to us.
What do I get at handover?
A walkthrough and the app on your phones, plus photos of the hidden cable paths and the finished install, a device inventory, a map of the network and cable runs, labeled cables, and a support sheet with who to call.
Why UniFi and not Ring, Nest or Arlo?
Those are single devices, each with its own app and usually a monthly plan. UniFi is one system: network, cameras, doorbell and sensors from one manufacturer, in one app, with recordings stored in your home and no monthly fees.
Do I have to pay a subscription for UniFi?
No. The recorder sits in your home, so there is nothing to pay each month for recording or for the app.
Can you take over a UniFi system someone else installed?
Yes. We look at what’s there, fix what’s wrong, finish what’s missing, and move it under your own account with every cable labeled and mapped.
Is the UniFi account mine?
Yes. Every system is set up under your own account. The equipment, the recordings and the admin access are yours.
